I really do enjoy a good pub lunch. We are lucky as we are surrounded by good drinking establishments in Brentwood but dinner at the Nag’s head is what I wanted to try.
Situated near the M25 and a short drive from Brentwood town centre, The Nag’s head is at the perfect spot for the locals and is an even better place to EAT!
Recently renovated and given a fresh contemporary décor, Gary and I were not sure what to expect when we first walked in but we were impressed. The bar area is separate from the restaurant (which I prefer) and the new seating and layout made the place feel cosy and inviting. The new menu also took a contemporary creative spin on some classic dishes. There was a good variety of options for starters including the scallops of the day, Sweet chilli king prawn roll and deep-fried brie, and mains hosted roasted rack of lamb, pancetta carbonara and seared salmon fillet.
I wanted to try something different so I opted for the thyme-roasted portobello mushrooms which were delicious and rich in a Cropwell Bishop sauce. Gary, on the other hand, decided on the calamari with a dash of pepper and lemon flavour which was pretty tasty.
I do love a pie so it was nice to see a chicken, leek and crème fraiche one on the menu. It even came fully formed and not just a pie top which many pubs tend to do. Anyhow, it was incredible. With a ham hock crumb topping and seasonal vegetables, it was a truly delicious meal. Gary opted for the braised pork cheek with mash potato which was cooked perfectly and lovely too.
To finish off the meal, I persuaded Gary to share a cheesecake with raspberry purée and vanilla ice cream. He didn’t seem to complain too much when he took his first bite and the flavour fusion was just perfect.
Overview
We had such a wonderful time at The Nag’s Head. It is a really friendly place and the staff were lovely. If you live in the area or nearby, it is well worth a visit. To make a reservation or find out more about the pub, visit their website here.
