Creating our new walk-in-wardrobe

I have always dreamed of having a walk-in-wardrobe.

When I first watched Sex and the City I saw Carries’s walk-through closet, I knew me and Gary needed something like that in our lives.

After a few trials, Gary discovered that the walls in our 116 year old house were surprisingly rubbish when it came to attaching anything to them so with a quick re-design, Gary created these amazing wooden pigeon holes to act as draws for us and to also support the rails which we knew would be loaded with my heavy stuff.

As we couldn’t have this structure completely free standing(safety people), Gary used wall bolts to secure the wooden frame to the wall but left all the weight to be taken up by the wood and and floor – Genius!

As you can imagine, I couldn’t wait to get my stuff in as soon as he was done!

I love having the pigeon holes for draws. I have used this style for a while and it really does save on space and you can get these great fabric draws which help keep your socks and bits in place!

Gary does have a side of the room to himself too but as you can imagine, I have a few more clothes than he does.

We will sadly need to decorate this room eventually but for now I think it looks pretty great and getting dressed in the morning is a lot easier.

If you would like your own walk-in -wardrobe, here are a few tips to help you on your way:

DESIGN – Draw out the style of wardrobe you want with measurements for the room. Once you have this finished mark out where you want things to go on the walls. Always recheck this before you start drilling and making your unit.

BACKUP PLAN – Gary came across a few problems when he first started so think about problems you may have occur to save time and money in the future.

CLEAR OUT – Have one. Really us girls should be having one every 6 months. You will feel loads better when your walk-in is finished, plus you will have room for new stuff.

TOOLS – You will need a few tools for this job so borrow or buy on eBay what you need and remember your safety glasses!
